As we approach Remembrance Day (not to mention a civic election), there is no shortage of things to do in New West. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Nov. 7 to 9.

1.  Pick up some gifts for family and friends – and help African grandmothers at the same time – at the Artisans Crafts for Africa sale that’s taking place on Friday, Nov. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 326 12th St. The Royal City Gogos’ sale features items that have been handcrafted in Canada and Africa, including fashion accessories, treats for pets, soft furnishings for the home and gifts, as well as the launch of the new Dare to Dine cookbook. All proceeds will go to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

2.  Support the programs at Century House at the annual craft sale and tea that’s taking place on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 1:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 620 Eighth St. The sale includes pottery, bake sale, books, jewelry, raffles, quilting, variety crafts, and a white elephant sale, and an afternoon tea. Everyone is welcome.

3.  Check out Wayang: an Indonesian shadow puppet show taking place on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St. Anthonius Hardono, a puppeteer in wayang performance, will lead this free performance for folks of all ages.

4.  Beat the crowds and cast your vote for this year’s civic election at advance voting that’s taking place on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the New Westminster Lawn Bowling clubhouse at 710 Eighth St. from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

5.  Celebrate the history and heritage of the paranormal at Coldspotters, a paranormal convention at the Columbia Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 9. When doors open at 5 p.m., you’ll have a chance to have a bite to eat, check out the various vendors and meet the Coldspotters team. The presentation gets underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available at www.thecolumbia.ca.
