Santa should be hard at work in the North Pole preparing for Christmas, but he’s taking some time out of his busy schedule to visit New West. Visits with Santa are among the offerings in the The Record's Top Five (or More) Things to do in New West this weekend. Here are our suggestions for some pre-Christmas fun with your family Dec. 19 to 21.

1.  Check out the shops on 12th Street and visit Santa when he makes an appearance at Press Start at 734 12th St. You and your family will be able to enjoy free photos with Santa and hot chocolate on Saturday, Dec. 20 from noon to 3 p.m.

2.  Take a spin around the ice at the Skate With Santa event that’s taking place on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Moody Park Arena. The event includes family-oriented games and activities. Be sure to bring a camera to snap on-ice photos with Santa Claus. Regular arena admission rates apply for this event. For more information, call Moody Park Arena at 604-525-5301.

3.  Step back in time at the historic Christmas programs at Irving House. The Christmas Cheer drop-in event takes place on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. You can tour Irving House and enjoy some musical performances with a festive flavour. Irving House is at 302 Royal Ave.

4.  Join local youth at the Bhangra Bash, which features a free butter chicken lunch, a scavenger hunt, henna, make rangoli make, games, tournaments and prizes. It’s all happening on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Westminster Youth Centre in Moody Park. The free event is for kids in grades 6 to 8. For more information, contact youth worker Salisha Ali at 604-834-0320 or sali@newwest

5.  Support local businesses in the final weekend of shopping before Christmas. Whether you’re looking for some last-minute gifts, some treats to serve guests or some last-minute decorations, you’ll find shops in Sapperton, uptown, downtown and 12th Street who’ll have just what you’re looking for.

6.  Don your ugliest Christmas sweater and head to River Market for your last chance to pick up some goodies at the Royal City Farmers Market and the Holiday Artisans Fair before Christmas, which are both running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 810 Quayside Dr.
