Entertainment and fundraising options abound in New Westminster this weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Oct. 24 to 26.
1. Check out the final night of Doc Fest New West, when Boyhood takes to the screen at Landmark Cinemas 10 New Westminster. The show takes place on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 or $5 for seniors and youth.
2. Immerse yourself in the sounds of ancient Indian classical music and dance at the third annual Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance, which takes to the Massey Theater stage on Saturday, Oct. 25. New Westminster’s own internationally recognized Cassius Khan and Amika Kushwaha founded the event, which is a tribute to his guru, the late Ghazal Queen Mushtari Begun. Tickets are $35 for adults, $18 for seniors and students, and free for children under eight. If you buy four tickets, you get one for free. 3. Celebrate Diwali 2014 – The Festival of Lights at the Queensborough community centre on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. The event includes entertainment, mehendi, games, food, coffee and more.
4. Support Team B.C. freshman women’s lacrosse team in their bid to raise funds to attend two upcoming tournaments in Washington and California. The team is holding a used clothing and bottle drive on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at New Westminster Secondary School. All donations of clothing, accessories, linens and bedding are gratefully appreciated.
5. Have a Yappy Halloween at the Terminal Pub, when Bosley’s Columbia Square holds a fundraiser for the New Westminster animal shelter. The pub party fundraiser takes place on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at. 115 12th St. Each $22 ticket includes a burger and a drink, with $10 going to the shelter. Pets aren’t allowed in the pub, but partygoers are encouraged to dress up as their pet.
6. Get into the Halloween spirit at Poets Wanted: Dead or Alive, the Halloween edition of Poetic Justice, which is taking place on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heritage Grill, 447 Columbia St. The extended open mike features poets’ own dark, eerie, mysterious poetry or poetry of a dead poet of their choice. The event includes a costume contest with prizes and Halloween fun.
7. Pick up some new reading material at the Royal City Rotary used book sale at River Market. It’s taking place on Friday, Oct. 24 (noon to 7 p.m.), Saturday, Oct. 25 (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday, Oct. 26 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
