The City of New Westminster is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Wait for Me Daddy photograph on Oct. 3 at Anvil Centre and Hyack Square. Last October, the city unveiled the Wait for Me, Daddy sculpture in Hyack Square.

New Westminster is the place to be this weekend, when folks will flock to the city for the big reveal of the Wait for Me Daddy monument, stamp and toonie. While it’s the big event on this weekend’s calendar, it’s certainly not the only thing worth checking out.  Here are our Top Five (or More) Things to do in New West for Oct. 3 to 5.

1.  Celebrate a memorable day when the city unveils the Wait for Me Daddy monument in Hyack Square on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. At the same time that the city unveils a monument based on the iconic Wait for Me Daddy photograph from the Second World War, Canada Post will be unveiling a new stamp based on the image and the Canadian Mint will release a new toonie featuring the Wait for Me Daddyimage. From 12:30 to 3 p.m., you can buy the new stamp, exchange a toonie for the new Wait for Me Daddycoin, check out the opening of the Wait for Me Daddymuseum exhibit in the New Westminster Museum, view the Wait for Me Daddy visual arts exhibit in Anvil Centre and more.

2.  Head downtown for the first lighting of the Wait for me Daddy monument in Hyack Square. New Westminster Police Department has the honour of lighting the war memorial for the first time. The event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

3.  Check out some live demonstrations and equipment displays and tour the fire safety house at New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service’s 2015 open house. The event, taking place on Sunday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glenbrook Fire Hall, also includes a visit from Sparky the fire dog and a barbecue (by donation) with proceeds going to the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society.

4.  Pick up some plants at the Burnaby Cactus and Succulent Society plant sale that’s taking place on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Royal Square Mall, located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and McBride Boulevard.

5.  Tune in to Music at Queens, which features a performance by the West Coast Symphony on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation. The performance takes place at Queens Avenue United Church, 529 Queens Ave.

6.  Take an exercise class, get a massage and enjoy free pizza at the grand opening of ZHOOSH Fitness Garage in New West. The gym, located at 131 11th St., opened on April 1 but is ready to celebrate on Sunday, Oct. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised will go to Parkinson Society of B.C.
