1. Paint it red and cheer on the New Westminster Salmonbellies in their quest for a 25th Mann Cup. The best-of-seven series begins on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at Queen’s Park Arena, when the ‘Bellies take on the Peterborough Lakers. Games, as needed, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 9, Monday, Sept. 11, Tuesday, Sept. 12, Wednesday, Sept. 13, Friday, Sept. 15 and Saturday, Sept. 16. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students and $10 for children 12 and under.
2. Check out the Recovery Day B.C. Festival on Saturday, Sept. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. near Sixth and Sixth in uptown New West. A celebration of recovery from addiction, the festival includes a kids’ zone featuring face painting, clowns and a bouncy castle, food trucks, mental health and addiction wellness information booths, a street circus for the whole family, two live music stages, TEDx-style speakers, a memorial centre to honour those lost to addictions and more.
3. Cheer for the New Westminster Hyacks and enjoy all the festivities at the New Westminster Hyacks 2017 Homecoming event. The action gets underway at 4 p.m. with the alumni flag football game and is followed by the pre-game party at 5 p.m., featuring a family fun zone and mascot mania, tug of war, entertainment and more. 4. Celebrate Grandparents Day with the Parent Support Services at New Westminster Quay (near River Market) on Sunday Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event includes live music, crafts, face painting, kids’ games, a silent auction, a Grandparents Day walk and prizes. 5. Head to Olivet Baptist Church for its annual Big Gig street party on Sunday, Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 600 block of Queens Avenue. Meet your neighbours and enjoy games, a ventriloquist, a bake sale, $2 burgers and music on the street.
6. Check out the latest exhibition in the Gallery at Queen’s Park: My Face My Canvas, a solo exhibition by Tajah Olson. The gallery is open Wednesdays from 1 to 8 p.m. and Thursdays to Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The exhibition runs Sept. 6 to 30.
