What's happening in New West this weekend? Top picks for Sept. 6 to 8

Community members of all ages are invited to celebrate grandparents and other kinship caregivers at the Parent Support Services Society of B.C.'s Grandparents Day event on Sunday, Sept. 8.Contributed

1. Celebrate grandparents – and other kinship caregivers – at the Parent Support Services Society of B.C.’s Grandparents Day event at River Market. Everyone is welcome to attend the event that includes games, crafts, music performances and info/resource booths. It’s on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the River Market, 810 Quayside Dr.

2. Raise a little hell and celebrate recovery from addiction at Recovery Day featuring entertainment including headliners Trooper and SonReal, a kid’s zone, an overdose memorial centre, food trucks, and 150 health and wellness information booths and vendors. The free festival is on Saturday, Sept. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. at Sixth and Sixth. Info: www.recoverydaybc.ca.

3. Swing by the Massey Victory Heights Residents’ Association’s annual neighbourhood block party on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the small park near the corner of Churchill Avenue and Scott Street (by the tennis/basketball courts). All community members are invited to drop by and enjoy kids activities, including a bouncy castle, a face painter, arts and crafts, mini soccer games, a visit from a fire truck, and a fundraising barbecue (for $5 you get a burger, small bag of chips and a can of pop.)

4. Discuss the science of climate change at Climate Science 101, a primer for activists. Science teacher Jennifer Nathan will speak at this event being hosted by Babies for Climate Action, a group of parents organizing family-friendly climate change actions in New West. It’s on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. at 326 12th St.

5. Get outdoors and enjoy the mild weather while it lasts. Some of our favourite spots to enjoy the great outdoors in New West include Westminster Pier Park and the waterfront, the trail around Queensborough’s waterfront (double the fun if you take the Q to Q ferry from the Quay), Sapperton Landing Park and Glenbrook Ravine.
