1. Take in a New Westminster tradition when the Hyack International Parade returns to the Royal City on Saturday, May 26 at 11 a.m. The parade – featuring floats, marching bands, mascots and much more – starts at Sixth Street at Eighth Avenue, travels down Sixth Street and turns onto Queens Avenue and heads toward Queen’s Park.
2. Shred and shed clutter at the New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society’s annual shred-athon on Sunday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canada Games Pool parking lot, 65 East Sixth Ave. In addition to shredding your old documents, the shred-athon includes a barbecue and entertainment – and everything is by donation. At the same time and location, the New West Lions accepting clothing donations at a shed-athon.
3. Tour an eclectic array of homes in the 39th annual New Westminster Heritage Homes Tour on Sunday, May 27 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets are $35 or $25 for New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society members and are available at Benjamin Moore Royal City Colours (700 12th St.), Champagne Taste Home (1101 Royal Ave.), Anvil Centre – New Westminster Archives (second floor, 777 Columbia St.) and GardenWorks at Mandeville (4746 Marine Dr., Burnaby)
4. Celebrate Public Works Week at an open house at the city’s engineering operations works yard, where you’ll find interactive displays, demonstrations and more. It’s on Saturday, May 26 from noon to 4 p.m. at the works yard at 901 First St.
5. Drop in to Drone Day New Westminster 2018 on Saturday, May 26, hosted by the New Median Gallery and the Arts Council of New Westminster. An open drone event is taking place on the Front Street Mews (655 Front St.) starting at noon, while visual artist and singer Carol Sayer will be at the New Media Gallery (777 Columbia St.) from 3 to 4 p.m. to offer her take on its TRACE exhibition. 6. Check out the offerings at the Hyack Festival Uptown Street Fest on Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Located on Belmont Street (just off the parade route on Sixth Street), the festival features vendors, food and more.
Lend a hand at the Glenbrook Ravine enhancement project initiative that’s taking place on Saturday, May 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers of all ages are invited to participate. The work takes place in near the centre of the ravine – so you can access it from Jamieson Court or Glenbrook Drive. (Take note: parking could be challenging because there’s not parking at the Glenbrook Park Amenities Centre today because it’s off limits today due to a community garage sale.) Check out the artistic offerings of little ones at the Queen’s Park Parent Participation Preschool’s third annual student arts exhibition, the Kindness Connection. It’s running until May 27 in the Gallery at Queen’s Park, which is located in Centennial Lodge. The gallery is open today through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
