We’ve got some eclectic shopping offerings happening around town this weekend – as well as some other entertaining options. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Nov. 28 to 30.
1. Support some of British Columbia’s most elite dancers who are taking part in the Gala for Gold fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at Massey Theatre. Dancers are raising funds to defend their title at the Dance Organizations World Championships in Poland in December, where they’ll compete in jazz, contemporary and ballet. The Gala for Gold fundraiser includes performances that some of the team members will perform in Poland, as well as silent and live auctions. Tickets are $21.95 and available at masseytheatre.com or 604-521-5050.
2. Check out the curious and not-so-unusual offerings at this month’s Curious Flea at River Market on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You’ll find everything from mid-century modern to 60s kitsch at the upscale flea market. Curious Flea also features upcycling workshops, a photo booth, an onsite appraiser and a Battle of the Curious, where folks are challenged to bring weird and wonderful items from home to compete for prizes.
3. Get into the Christmas spirit at the annual Herbert Spencer Christmas Craft fair, which is taking place on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 605 Second St. You’ll find more than 40 vendors, a bake sale, bistro and raffle. Admission is free.
4. Take the kids to River Market for the Think Bigg with Trent Arterberry performance on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. During the show, which is aimed at kids aged five and up, the three-foot tall human puppet Mr. Bigg dances to rap and Russian folk songs. Children will be participating in the fun show that features storytelling, mime, music and puppetry. ArtStarts is offering the two free shows at River Market, 810 Quayside Dr.
5. View the artwork in the New Westminster Public Library, which has been celebrating nature and veterans this month. In the upstairs gallery, Disposition of Nature features works in various media by Nina Shenton, while the ramp gallery on the main floor includes art by a group of Second World War veterans. The art can be viewed anytime during library hours until Nov. 30. The library is located at 716 Sixth Ave.
