Winter Discovery Days at Fraser River Discovery Centre, features a variety of activities daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular admission fees apply. Wishing Tree in Moody Park. For every wish made to protect nature, the lights on the tree will dance – and $10 will be donated to help preserve parks in B.C. Make a wish by speaking to the tree, hanging a written wish on a nearby sapling, or sharing your wish online at https://25x25.ca/wishingtree/

Until Jan. 31

Gardens of Light, Storytelling Sculptures, the Parol Christmas Star lantern display and Shine Bright Downtown continue until the end of January. They’re all part of Shine Bright New West. Details at newwestcity.ca/shine-bright.

Saturday, Jan. 6

The Royal City Rotary Club is hosting a community bottle drop-off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 166 Sixth St. All rinsed bottles, cans and refundable beverage containers can be dropped off. Proceeds are going to support community projects. 

Saturday, Jan. 6 and Sunday, Jan. 7

New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society annual tree chipping fundraiser. Drop off your Christmas tree for chipping. This by-donation event raises money for various local programs supported by the charitable society. It’s on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the New Westminster City Hall parking lot, 511 Royal Ave.

Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story, an Arts Club Theatre Company on Tour Production, comes to Anvil Theatre. This one-person show is the inspiring true story of the African-Canadian “singing miner” that emerged from the 1958 Springhill, Nova Scotia, mining disaster. Note: This performance contains mature and racially charged language. Theatrical devices such as water-based fog and haze and flashing lights may occur in this production. Tickets from $29

Wednesday, Jan. 17 and Friday, Jan. 19

Annie Jr., presented by the New Westminster Secondary School musical theatre. Tickets are $10 in advance, with a limited number of cash tickets available at the door. It’s taking place in the New Westminster Secondary School Theatre, 820 Sixth St., at 7 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 20

Disney’s High School Musical: One Act Edition, presented by the New Westminster Secondary School musical theatre. Tickets are $10 in advance, with a limited number of cash tickets available at the door. It’s taking place in the New Westminster Secondary School Theatre, 820 Sixth St., at 7 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 18

Like Buttah: The Barbra Streisand Tribute Show takes a look at the career of this legendary performer. Classic film scholar Michael Van Den Bos showcases Streisand’s vocals and performances from her film and television appearances, all projected on the big screen. Guests can purchase two signature cocktails, Don’t Rain on my Parade and Send in the Clowns, created just for the event. (Attendees are advised to pre-order because supplies are limited to ensure freshness.) Other beverages and treats are available for purchase, and are permitted in this venue during the show. It’s happening at 7 p.m. in the Studio Theatre 1B at the Eighth & Eight Creative Spaces, 735 Eighth Ave. Tickets are $21 to $27, plus service charge.

Thursday, Jan. 25

International Guitar Night returns to Massey Theatre, with performances by three IGN favourites – Luca Sticagnoli (Italy), Thu Le (Vietman) and Marco Pereira (Brazil), and one exciting newcomer – Minnie Marks (Australia). The show is at 7 p.m. at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave.

Saturday, Jan. 27

In The Hetereosexuals, writer/performer Johnnie McNamara Walker presents a deep-dive into the shocking world of Heterosexuality! Following the intermission, the party continues with the West Coast debut of HEY GIRL HEY with DJ Orange Pekoe (aka Johnnie Walker), who will be serving up an inclusive and fun dance party featuring hip-hop, R&Band pop tunes with a twist – each track must feature a woman and/or non-binary artist.  This event is taking place at 8 p.m. in Studio 1C at the Eighth and Eight Creative Spaces, 735 Eight Ave. Tickets are $30.

Tuesday, Jan. 30

Piva Modern Italian’s monthly Jazz at the Anvil features Wild Blue Herons (with Horns!). It’s at 7 p.m. at Anvil Centre. Tickets at ticketsnw.ca.
