Tuesday, Jan. 6

Fun, Learning and You, a program for children aged 18 months to five years and their parents or caregivers, 10 a.m. to noon. Offered by the Lower Mainland Purpose Society, the program runs every Wednesday from Jan. 6 to March 23. Free for New Westminster residents. Join in on circle times, preschool readiness and play in a rich thematic program. Parent information sessions include speech and language, early literacy and more. Wednesday, Jan. 7

English Made Easy is offered by the Lower Mainland Purpose Society, a program for non-English speaking families (adults with limited or no English skills) and their children aged zero to five years. English Made Easy runs every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon from Jan. 7 to March 25, 2015. Free for New Westminster residents. Includes practical English classes for the caregivers and songs, stories and crafts (with an emphasis on English) for the children. For information or to register, contact Elizabeth at 604-526-2522. Social Knitwork, drop-in knitting group at New Westminster Public Library, 7 p.m. Meets the first Wednesday of the month and is open to all ages and skill levels. The only requirement is to enjoy knitting and chatting with other knitters. Bring your own yarn, needles, scissors and supplies. Beginners are welcome. Drop by the New Westminster Public Library with your tablet, phone, ereader or gadget and library staff will help you get started. Beside the basics, staff can show you how to download the library app, borrow ebooks, eaudiobooks and emagazines and access newspapers online. The New Westminster Public Library is at 716 Sixth Ave., www.nwpl.ca and 604-527-4660.

Canadian culture in the workplace, a free workshop from 10 a.m. to noon, New Westminster Pubic Library. The workshop will be of particular interest to newcomer to Canada, who will learn new skills, become more competitive in the labour industry, gain confidence and become better prepared during employment interviews. The workshop will be conducted in English, tiw2ht translation available in French. If you have a permanent resident card or landed immigrant documents, please bring them to the program. The New Westminster Puffers Club, monthly meeting, 12:30 to 2 p.m., New Westminster Public Library auditorium, 716 Sixth Ave.  Anyone with COPD. an any other breathing problems are welcome  to attend,

Thursday, Jan. 15

The Adult Book Club, meets at New Westminster the third evening of the month at 7 p.m. The club reads a variety of fiction and nonfiction throughout the year and is reading a book of their own choice for this meeting. Tuesday, Jan. 20

Bring Your Baby Book Club, offers adult books and adult conversation in a baby-friendly environment. New moms and dads need brain stimulation too. Suggested ages for babies are zero to 24 months. The club meets the third Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. The group is reading Room by Emma Donoghue for this meeting. Monday, Jan. 26

Family Literacy Night at New Westminster Public Library. Drop into the library between 6 and 8 p.m. for games, crafts and other activities to celebrate Family Literacy Week. You’ll be able to make high-tech art, learn about science and music, challenge others to video and board games, share favourite books and movies and much more.
