The New Westminster Council of Women is exploring Canadian Culture and oppression at its next meeting - and you're invited to share your input.

The New Westminster Council of Women is expecting a lively discussion about Canadian culture at its May meeting.

Active since 1893, the New Westminster Council of Women is a chapter of the National Council of Women of Canada.

“Our mandate is to improve the lives of women, families and communities,” said Lesley Hebert, president of the New Westminster Council of Women. “Our meetings are not restricted to women only, and are open to anyone who wishes to work toward these goals.”

The group’s next meeting is on Thursday, May 26 at noon in the New Westminster Public Library. A $5 donation is suggested; a light lunch will be provided.

The New Westminster Council of Women has been meeting via Zoom during the pandemic, but plans to begin holding monthly in-person meetings once again. Community members are invited to take part in what’s expected to be “a lively discussion on what Canadian culture means to you”, which will be followed by the group’s annual general meeting.

"We have chosen the topic "What does Canadian Culture Mean to You" in response by a request for feedback on this topic from Randi Gage, culture and heritage convener of the National Council of Women of Canada, who stated: The council strives to be a diverse group of women representing the total spectrum of Canadian Society," Hebert said in an email to the Record. "We must continue to work to develop stronger supportive cultural and heritage policies to better allow the NCWC to deal with the challenges of racism, sexism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, classism, religious prejudice, xenophobia and other "ism" forms of oppression. Randi is seeking a better understanding of the council's role within Canada in order to better serve all Canadian women and their families.”

Past New Westminster Council of Women meetings have tackled issues such as mental health, COVID impacts on immigrant women and density.
