O ctober is an excellent month to indulge your travel bug at the New Westminster Public Library.

A new season of the monthly travel show starts in October. Sponsored by the University Women's Club of New Westminster since 1972, the season runs from October to June with a break for December and January. The shows are presented twice, on the first Wednesday at 2: 30 p.m. and the second Wednesday at 7: 30 p.m. This fall, come and explore Southern India with Debbie Smith in October and Italy with Michael Legeyt in November.

If the travel bug really has a hold or you like to fantasize, you can learn to Plan Your First Trip Around the World on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. Avid world traveller Max Vincent will offer his insights into planning a major trip, including how to pack and what to expect along the way. Pre-register at 604-527-4667.

Travel enthusiasts can also find good support in the library's magazines and books. Planning is easier if you follow those who have gone on before. Take a look at The Packing Book by Judith Gilford and The Traveler's Tool Kit by Rob Sangster.

Magazines such as National Geographic Traveler, Conde Nast Traveler and Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel coax you to farflung places, but Beautiful British Columbia encourages you to explore closer to home.

Travel guides to countries of the world help you become familiar with the places you're travelling to before you go. Lonely Planet, Fodor's, Frommer's and Eyewitness Guides are some of the publishers of excellent guides.

As Mark Twain said, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour.

Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Even if it's from your armchair.
