Terry Fox Run 2013
Participants in the 2013 Terry Fox Run in New Westminster take to the esplanade during last year's run on the riverfront.

It’s an exciting weekend as the City of New Westminster welcomes the community into the long-awaited Anvil Centre. It’s just one of our recommendations for the Top Five (or More) Things to Do in New Westminster this weekend. Here are our suggestions for Sept. 12 to 14.

1.  Head over to Moody Park for the Sundown Festival for youth aged 13 to 18 years. The festival, which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 3 to 7 pm., includes live performances, on-stage demonstrations, a barbecue, silk screening, games and more. Admission is $5 in advance or $10 at the entrance. For more information, call 604-834-0320 or 604-515-3081.

2.  Celebrate the grand opening of Anvil Centre on Sunday, Sept. 14 from noon to 6 p.m. at 777 Columbia St. Facility tours, performances, activities and entertainment will be part of the city’s big day. The official ribbon cutting takes place at 1:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.anvil
centre.com.

3.  Check out local artists’ reflections on Love, Loss and Loyalty, the opening exhibition in the community art space in Anvil Centre at 777 Columbia St. The exhibit opens on Sunday, Sept. 14 from noon to 6 p.m. as part of the Anvil Centre grand opening. Twenty-six local artists are part of the exhibit, which explores some of the themes of the famous Wait For Me, Daddy photograph that will soon be captured in a monument in Hyack Square.

4.  Support cancer research at the annual Terry Fox Run in New Westminster. It’s taking place on Sunday, Sept. 14 starting at 10 a.m. at River Market. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. in the market. People are invited to run, walk, wheel or bike the one-, two-, five- or 10-kilometre routes along the riverfront.

5.  Help plant 150 trees in lower Hume Park as part of TD Tree Days 2014. The planting is taking place on Sunday, Sept. 14, starting at 10 a.m. – rain or shine. It’s one of more than 140 events taking place across Canada where volunteers will help plant 50,000 tress in celebration of the TD Tree Days’ fifth anniversary. To register for TD Tree Days or to get more information, visit www.tdtreedays.com.

6.  Audition for the Seniors Have Talent show that will take place Oct. 19 at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall. If you’re 55 or older, and you sing, dance, tell stories or joke or do any other type of entertainment (in less than four-and-a-half minutes), this is your chance to compete for cash prizes. Auditions are taking place on Sunday, Sept. 14. To book a time, contact 604-522-0280.
