There’s a lot to do on this first full weekend of fall. We’re continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for the Sept. 27 to 29 weekend.

1.  Take a night off and let the folks at Holy Eucharist Church cook dinner for you. The church is having its monthly perogy dinner on Friday, Sept. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. You can dine in or take out some tasty dinner fixings including perogies, cabbage rolls and more. The church is located at 501 Fourth Ave.

2.  Celebrate B.C. Rivers Day at the Fraser River at RiverFest: Inspired by the Fraser. The celebration, which is taking place along the riverfront boardwalk, includes live entertainment, artist and artisans’ displays, paddlewheeler river tours, interactive displays from river-related conservation and environmental organizations, the Lucille Johnstone workboat parade, a salmon chowder cook-off and activities and crafts for people of all ages. The fun takes place on the boardwalk on Friday, Sept. 27 from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

3.  Check out Fraser River Discovery Centre, which has expanded its gallery space onto the second floor of the riverfront facility. The centre is unveiling its second floor space – and three new exhibits – in time for B.C. Rivers Day. The unveiling takes place on Saturday, Sept. 28 at noon at Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr. My River My Home, I Spy With My Little Eye and Aliens Among Us are the newest exhibitions at the centre, which is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 pm. Admission to the galleries is by donation.

4.  Discover that classical music is far from boring at the Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance that’s taking place on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Massey Theatre. Top-calibre Canadian-Indian artists including singers, dancers and musicians will take part in the event and will demonstrate the universality of their art.  Tickets are on sale at the Massey Theatre box office at 604-521-5050 or at www.masseytheatre.com. For more information, visit www.mushtaribegum
festival.webs.com.

5.  Learn about the history of waterfronts from ancient times to the present at a presentation by architect, planner and urban redevelopment consultant Peter Brown, who will be doing a public lecture at Fraser River Discovery Centre on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 12:30 p.m. He’ll provide examples of how other cities have approached waterfront development – and offer lessons about how these cities’ actions can help New Westminster and Fraser River waterfront developments. Fraser River Discovery Centre is located at 788 Quayside Dr.
