1. Celebrate the opening of LitFest New West at the kickoff event on Friday, April 24 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the New Westminster Public Library. Bob Robertson and Linda Cullen are hosting this inspirational evening with Roxanne Davies, author of Olga: the O.K. Way to a Healthy, Happy Life. The book was co-written with the late Kotelko, who took up track and field in her 70s and won numerous medals and broke world records before her death at the age of 95. Space is limited so preregistration is needed by calling 604-527-4667 or emailing [email protected]. The presentation will be followed by refreshments.

2.  Enjoy LitFest New Westminster 2015, which includes a full day of workshops, author readings and a literary marketplace, as well as the evening of poetry readings and the showcase of literary and musical talent, Written in the Stars. 3.  Skip breakfast at home and enjoy a pancake and sausage breakfast, courtesy of the New Westminster Lions Club. The breakfast is on Saturday, April 25 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church hall/courtyard, 1010 Fifth Ave. Breakfast is by donation.

4.  Check out the roller derby season opener on Saturday, April 25 at the Royal City Curling Club.  Season 9’s double header features matches between the Riot Girls and the Faster Pussycats (the 2014 house team championship finalists) and the Vancouver’s Terminal City All-Stars and Finland’s Helsinki Roller Derby All-Stars. Doors open at 5 p.m., the first whistle is at 6 p.m. and the second game gets underway at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids and free for kids five and under (cash or credit card at the door).

5.  Shop around at the Fraser Valley Antiques and Collectibles Club’s 22nd annual antiques and collectibles show at Queen’s Park Arena on Friday, April 24 (6:30 to 9:30 p.m.), Saturday, April 25 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Sunday, April 26 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). More than 200 tables will feature all kinds of antiques and collectibles. Admission is $4 – except for Friday, when early admission is $20 (and includes all three days).

6.  Support the new west animal shelter at the Bow Wow Birthday Bash on Sunday, April 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Zoomies Dog Daycare, 804 Agnes St. The event includes agility runs, vendor treats, face painting, birthday cake for pups and more. Entry is by donation (minimum $5).
