There's no excuse to be idle this weekend with the eclectic range of offerings taking place in New West. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record's Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Aug. 8 to 10.

1. Celebrate the launch of New West Pride's nine-day festival that celebrates the LGBT community in New West. The Stonewall Dance takes place on Friday, Aug. 8 at the Metro Hall, 759 Carnarvon St. and features DJ Jef Leppard. Tickets are $10. For more information about events, visit www.newwestpride.ca.

2. Learn about the Vancouver Whitecaps FC's proposed USL pro soccer proposal for Queen's Park Stadium. A forum is being held on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, taking place at Centennial Community Centre (next to Canada Games Pool), includes an open house starting at 11 a.m. and a discussion at 11:30 a.m. More information is available by calling 604-527-4567.

3. Take in some great music and food at this year's Uptown Live event on Sunday, Aug. 10 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the area around Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street. The street festival features music, three beer gardens, food trucks, BMX bike demonstrations, kids activities and more. 4. Check out the cultural offerings in New West by visiting local galleries, theatres and historical venues during the 11th annual New Westminster Cultural Crawl. During this year's Cultural Crawl, you can visit five neighbourhoods over two days to view 23 venues and see works by more than 50 artists. 5. Enjoy a garden party in Queensborough at the Port Royal Community garden on Sunday, Aug. 10. The Art in Bloom and English Tea Party features gardens in bloom, original works by Artists in the Boro from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and live music and refreshments from 12 to 3 p.m. The annual event, which takes place across from 83 Star Cres., is in support of the New West Cultural Crawl.
