Top 5 places for bookworms this summer

In the library
Westminster Pier Park
If you're out for a stroll at Westminster Pier Park, be sure to look for a new plaque commemorating part of the city's history.

As the spring weather turns glorious, a bookworm’s mind turns to one thing: where should I go to read? We asked New Westminster Public Library staff and users for their recommendations for favourite summer reading spots. Here’s what they told us.

“Queen’s Park is a great place for peace and quiet. The shady places are better for reading ebooks on your tablet.”

Want a more bustling environment?

“One of my favourite outdoor places is the Quay. There’s food, stores, and bathrooms inside the Market, gorgeous river views (if you can tear your eyes from your book). I love the sounds of children and dogs in the background while I read.”

“Pier Park is a happening place. I like being in the swim of things but in my own little world reading my book. I like to grab a coffee from Old Crow on the way there.”

The concession at Pier Park will be open as of May 16, so you can settle in for a whole day of reading.

Think you don’t have time to read? There’s always lunch time.

“I had a meeting downtown and went to the Hide Out Café for lunch. The panini and coffee is great, and they have a lovely patio you can read on.”

Of course, library staff on their lunch hour often read right outside the libraries.

“The Main Library is half a block from Moody Park, and there are picnic benches where you can sit and read. With this warm spring I’ve been out there a few times already.”

It’s not just the Uptown location: the Queensborough Branch is located right inside Ryall Park, along with the rest of the Queensborough Community Centre. Best of all, if you run out of reading material, help is close at hand.

So come into the library to stock up on your favourite authors, then head outside to soak up the sun while you soak up a good book.

Happy reading.
