Purpose Secondary School is inviting community members to support its educational efforts by taking part in a sweet fundraiser.

The school, now located in the former Army & Navy Department Store on Columbia Street, is having a Krispy Kreme donut sale fundraiser on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (or until sold out) outside the neighbouring Columbia Street Sandwich Company, 550 Columbia St. Folks can buy one dozen of original Krispy Kreme donuts for $15 or two dozen for $28 (cash only).

Rick Gill, a Leadership 11/12 teacher at Purpose Secondary, said the event is being held to raise funds to support: the breakfast and lunch program that’s offered to all students; activities and field trips linked to student learning and growth; and monthly bus passes for students who cannot afford the expense.

Purpose Secondary School is tuition- and fee-free, in an effort to remove all financial barriers for families. It provides a relationship-based, student-centred learning environment where students feel emotional and physically safe.

Purpose Secondary School is able to enroll 90 students in Grade 8 to 12 who, for a variety of reasons, find it hard to have their learning, social emotional or mental health needs met in a traditional school setting. Students are able to graduate with a Dogwood diploma, enabling them to apply for post-secondary programs in universities, colleges and technical schools.

The school is part of the Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families, which operates a wide variety of programs.
