Everyone might know the New Westminster Public Library has books, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs, online resources and Internet access, to name just the most popular library collections and services.
But did you know you can ask us anything? We aim to answer any question that has been addressed to us either in person or by phone, email, chat or social media. If the answers don't lie in any of the resources available at the library, we will refer you to the most appropriate source. No question is too simple, too hard, or too embarrassing to ask!
Curious about what we are asked? While keeping in mind users' confidentiality, every Friday we post on the library's Facebook page the most interesting question of the week.
We receive historical research inquiries such as, "Is there a way of finding out the history of St. Peter's Cemetery in New Westminster?" "Was telephone service available in New Westminster in 1886?" or "Apparently there is a man buried in New Westminster who died in the war in Vietnam. Is this true and who was he?"
Other questions are science-related, such as, "Is it true that magnetic north is moving? Why?" or "Can you freeze sour cream?" While others refer to legal issues: "How can I find out more about the Strata Property Amendment Act?" or "Can a corporation buy a country?"
We've also been asked some interesting questions from literature, for example, "Which volume of the Gulag Archipelago depicted the story of a doctor visiting Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn who was then killed the following day? What was his name?"
On the funny side, we even offered pertinent information when asked, "How do you keep raccoons from eating grapes growing on a grapevine that's growing up the side of an apartment building?" And answered tricky crossword clues like "small leaf aperture," seven letters . with "stomata!"
