Fraser River Discovery Centre is kicking off 2021 with a program highlighting the mighty tugboat.
Super Saturdays is a regular series of public programs at FRDC that celebrate the living, working Fraser River. The next event, taking place on Saturday, Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will focus on tugboats.
“Everybody has seen tugboats cruising up and down the Fraser,” said Stephen Bruyneel, Fraser River Discovery Centre’s director of external relations and development. “These plucky crafts guide larger vessels safely into dock and pull barges of goods upriver. They’re very important, and we’d like to tell you all about them on Jan. 30 at our next Super Saturday.”
Visitors to the FRDC will learn: how tugboats keep the Fraser River’s economy afloat; what it takes to pilot a tugboat; and about all the parts of a tugboat and how they work together to keep it moving.
Guests will also be able to choose a craft kit and learn how to create their very own tugboat using simple origami techniques.
“There will be fun for the whole family, so come on down and join us,” Bruyneel said. “And don’t worry – it will also be safe, as all activities are consistent with our COVID health and safety plan, including the need to pre-register, limited numbers, timed visits, social distancing and frequent cleaning.”
Fraser River Discovery Centre, located at 788 Quayside Dr., provides a variety of exhibits, programs and activities related to the Fraser River.
Super Saturdays, which take place on the last Saturday of every month, are a series of public programs geared toward family-friendly activities, which focus on a different Fraser River topic each month. They are free with admission to the galleries.
