Balance is key, and building strength with a simple exercise program helps maintain balance, as well as well-being, energy and mobility in general.
While venturing outdoors, be sure to use walkers and canes to help with balance. Proper footwear is also important, and while sandals may be tempting in hot weather, they easily catch on things and increase the risk of falling.
Fraser Health also recommends using hip protectors to cushion bones in the event of a fall. Sunglasses and proper eyewear are also imperative to avoid glare from the sun.
While staying indoors, be sure to drink lots of fluids and use a fan and wet cloth to keep cool. Light clothing and hats also help.
If you know seniors in your neighbourhood, check in to make sure they have everything they need, as some may stay indoors to avoid the hot weather while missing doctors' appointments or not filling prescriptions.
Seniors can be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Symptoms can include cramps, tight muscles, headaches, nausea, dizziness and weakness. If you feel any of these, move to a cooler location, and if possible, run cool water over your skin or take small sips of water. For severe heat, try putting ice packs in the armpits and on the back of the neck.
