Fraser River Discovery Centre is focusing on birds, boats and board games on the Labour Day long weekend.

The Labour Day edition of Summer Days Discoveries is runs from Saturday, Sept. 4 to Monday Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

“Our Summer Days Discoveries programming is designed to make long weekends even more special this summer,” said Stephen Bruyneel, Fraser River Discovery Centre’s director of external relations and development.

With a focus on celebrating birds and boats of the Fraser River, this weekend’s activities and education opportunities include:

* Learn about gulls through the Bing-Gull game. Did you know that more than 20 species of gulls visit the Fraser River estuary every year?

* Create paper fish and foil boats using simple craft techniques, and have a race to see whose creations cut through the water the quickest.

* Discover how B.C.’s wildlife survives over the summer months by playing the Summer Ecology board game.

“All activities will be compliant with updated provincial COVID-19 health and safety protocols, including the requirement for all people aged 12 and above to wear masks inside the centre at all times,” Bruyneel said in a news release.

While COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place, Summer Days Discoveries will be drop-in events, so there is no need to pre-register.

Located at 788 Quayside Dr. on New Westminster’s waterfront, Fraser River Discovery Centre provides a variety of exhibits, programs and activities related to the Fraser River.
