The New Westminster Historical Society is shining the spotlight on Sapperton this month.

The society's Nov. 16 presentation will focus on the second part of a presentation about Sapperton. Wayne Wou, Carol McMeekin and Archie Miller have been carrying out some research on the neighbourhood and will look at a selection of East Columbia Street sites for the society's meeting.

"They will present photographs, fire insurance maps, lots of fascinating facts, an interesting array of names associated with all these sites and many stories all interconnected," a press release stated.

Everyone is welcome to attend the New Westminster Historical Society's free program, which is being held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7: 30 p.m. in the auditorium of the New Westminster Public Library at 716 Sixth Ave. Preregistration isn't required.

LET FLAG FLY

Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian is committed to seeing Flag Day across Canada.

Julian has reintroduced his private member's bill that calls on the Federal government to designate the Feb. 15 as a statutory holiday, Flag Day. Although Feb. 15 was declared National Flag Day by Parliament in 1996 to commemorate the day in 1965 when the current Canadian flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, he said the day isn't currently a full legal holiday and Canada is one of the very few countries today without a national flag day.

"I strongly believe that Canadians see this as a worthwhile idea and generally support such a day," he said.

Julian notes that the third Monday of February is a statutory holiday in a number of provinces. He said Flag Day could fall on the third Monday of February to merge with existing provincial holidays.

SEE THE 'STACHE

New WestminsterCoquitlam NDP MP Fin Donnelly will grow a moustache in honour of Jack Layton for the Movember campaign.

In memory of Layton, who passed away from cancer earlier this year, hundreds of New Democrat MPs, staff and supporters will grow a 'mo' as part of the New De-MO-crat team.

"This campaign is very personal to me," Donnelly said. "I think it is a fitting tribute to Jack. He was so positive throughout his illness; he would want us to continue to fight this disease and to do so with style and grace."

The Movember campaign encourages men to grow mustaches to raise awareness and donate funds to fight the prostate cancer.

"It is critical that we continue to raise awareness about prostate cancer," he said. "I hope others join the campaign - together, we can change the face of men's health."
