G.I. Joe, also known as Const. Joe Wright, will be making his second appearance at the New Westminster Police Department's soccer school this summer.

Attention parents, it's that time of year again - time to register your kids in the super popular New Westminster Police Department's soccer school.

For more than 30 years, the police department's soccer school has been a much-anticipated program for youngsters in the Royal City. The five-day program, which runs July 20 to 24 this year, takes place at Queen's Park stadium and is open to kids five to 10 years old.

On top of learning the basics of soccer from experienced community coaches, the kids get to witness many other fun police demonstrations, including a visit from the police dog service, the local fire department and G.I. Joe - Chicken Legs' (Const. Bruce Ballingal) successor.

The program has space for about 300 students but, as Record reporter Theresa McManus can attest, those spaces fill up quick. Registration starts at 9 a.m. on April 25 at the New Westminster police station, 555 Columbia St. Be sure to arrive early as keen parents often line up before 9 a.m. Parents are asked to bring completed registration and photo release forms with them on April 25.

The department is also looking for volunteers and coaching staff; minimum age is 13.
