Firefighters and hospital employees recently showed support for each other's efforts.

Members of the New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society held a barbecue at Royal Columbian Hospital in support of members of the Hospital Employees' Union. HEU Support Workers Day, held Aug. 24, is designed to acknowledge the work these members do - including preparing meals, sterilizing surgical tools, doing laundry services and cleaning hospital rooms.

"We try and do it every year for them," said Glen Bailey, president of the charitable society. "It started up when they had their contract ripped up about five years ago. It was a way of showing support."

New Westminster firefighters served up more than 300 hotdogs at the Aug. 29 barbecue, which was held outside Royal Columbian Hospital.

"A lot of people come out. We barbecue for them. We get to shake the boot. HEU makes a very nice donation," Bailey said. "It's a winwin."

The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society raises funds for a wide range of programs in New Westminster, including the Union Gospel Mission, the pediatric ward at Royal Columbian Hospital and meal programs in local schools.
