Seniors' issues higlighted

Stand for Seniors kicks of seniors' week

Staff, board members and volunteers from New Westminster’s Seniors Services Society took to the streets Oct. 1 to mark the start of National Seniors Week.
The event, dubbed Stand for Seniors, drew roughly 25 participants, who stood on the corner of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue, waving placards to help raise awareness of seniors’ issues.
“The main goal is to bring awareness to seniors,” said Kelly Friesen, an independent living coordinator with Seniors Service Society.
Many people walking by, including some seniors, were unaware there was a special occasion to mark seniors’ issues. The group stood on the corner for roughly an hour. Some of the slogans on the placards read: Call your grandma, hug a senior, and honk if you love seniors, Friesen said.
“We got a lot of honks, so that was positive,” she added.
