What’s happening?
The Royal City Gogos are hosting their sixth annual Artisan Crafts for Africa sale Nov. 3 to 5 in New Westminster.
What will I find at the sale?
In addition to unique handcrafted items made by 55 members of Royal City Gogos, the sale features items made by gogos groups in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island. Items include wooden cutting boards, marble cheese trays, unique Christmas decorations, soft furnishings for the home, accessories like jewelry and felted and fleece hats, silk and wool felted shawls and “memory bears” that are made from grandma’s old fur coats. You’ll find hundreds of items ranging from$5 to $350.
Is there anything new at this year’s sale?
In addition to expanding to three days, this year’s sale features Family Day on Sunday, Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Youth ambassadors will help kids shop, and kids can do their Christmas shopping at $5 and $10 tables. There will also be a free ArtsToGo craft workshop for kids and cookies to decorate and eat.
Why do the Royal City Gogos hold the Artisan Craft Sale for Africa?
The group will be sending all proceeds from the sale to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, where 90 per cent of the foundation’s money goes to community-based projects in 15 countries in Africa. The money supports African grandmothers who have undertaken the nurturing, safety and education of some of 17 million children orphaned by AIDS.
