What’s happening?
The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society is hosting its annual tree chip and barbecue this weekend. The event is a fundraiser for the society’s various community programs and all proceeds collected will be donated. There is no suggested minimum donation but every little bit helps, says firefighter Jeff Hutton.
“No suggested donation but all the donation will stay local in New West through our charitable society, so the more people help out with donations the more we can help out people around the city that are in need.”
Do I need to clean the tree?
Yes! Do you very best to take off all trimmings and trappings from your Christmas tree before you drop it off. Tinsel is especially troublesome so make sure the tree is clear, Hutton says.
“The tinsel and stuff like that is the biggest problem because it’ll clog up the chipper,” he adds.
What else is happening?
As mentioned, the firefighters will be firing up the barbecue so be sur to bring some change for a burger or hotdog. There will also be hot chocolate and popcorn and music on-site for your entertainment. The firefighters have also promised to do some fire extinguisher demonstrations. The New Westminster Lions Club will also be there collecting clothing for a clothing drive.
Anything else?
Last year, firefighters chipped a record 535 trees and hit their $6,000 fundraising goal.
When and where does the event take place?
The chip happens Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 6 and 7 at the Canada Games Poll parking lot off East Sixth Avenue. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
