What’s happening?
Scripts and Sips: Beer Edition is taking place in the main floor atrium at Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St. on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
What’s it all about?
The New Westminster Museum is currently featuring an exhibit called Bottoms Up: The Cultures of Drink in the Royal City. A press release notes that New Westminster has had a rich drinking culture history.
How so?
From the earliest days, New Westminster was a hub for taverns, billiards rooms and oyster saloons, where the thirsty were invited to imbibe.
“In 1880, there was one saloon for every 13 people,” says Barry Dykes, an archivist with the city. “New Westminster was famous for having the most bar seats of any city in B.C.”
By the mid 20th century, sailors followed well-established pub crawls though the downtown. Others enjoyed tea parties and shops like the Mecca Tea Room.
What’s Scripts and Sips all about?
This event features drink pairings with play readings, where anyone can participate. Everyone is invited to listen and/or participate in a live play reading, with roles being chosen from a hat of willing participants just prior to the reading. While listening to the readings, you’ll be able to sip on a beverage chosen to match the play.
What play is being read?
You’ll have to wait and see for now. The play will be chosen through a Twitter and Facebook poll @anvilctr before the event, so you can follow along on social media to help select the night’s reading.
