Know a good pie recipe? It might be time to pull it out and start baking.

The Royal City Farmers Market is hosting its first annual pie bake-off on Aug. 16 and all levels of bakers are welcome to enter this delicious competition.

Interested bakers can register in advance by filling out an online form (located at www. bit.ly/PIE2012 ) or by stopping by the information booth at the market on Aug. 9 or 16.

Bakers will need to supply an ingredient list for food safety reasons, but recipes will be kept confidential until after the bake-off, according to a media release.

Bakers can register as many pies as they'd like and are asked for a minimum $2 donation to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank for each pie entered, payable upon arrival, the release states.

Bakers and their pies should arrive between 3 and 5: 30 p.m. on Aug. 16 to check in and get ready for the tasting.

Pies should be brought in a disposable pan, or the baker's name should be labelled on bottom of the pan.

Blind tasting will take place from 5: 45 to 6: 30 p.m., with the winners being announced at 6: 45 p.m. Bakers are encouraged to bring their own cheering section.

Prizes will be awarded in five categories, and entrants can win in more than one.

The categories are: Best Flavour, Best Crust, Most Unique, Best Use of Local Ingredients And Best Overall.

In addition to the glory afforded by being crowned the winner of the categories above, each winner will receive $20 in market tokens good at any vendor, and each winner will get to select a book from a curated mini-library of our favourite cookbooks, selected with care with the help of Black Bond Books in Uptown New Westminster, the release says.
