There will be no Hyacks in Motion fun run/walk and health fair next month.
The organizer of the annual event aimed at encouraging healthy living through nutrition and activity has decided to cancel it this year. This would have been its fifth year.
“After four years, I am sad to say that Hyacks in Motion: Health and Physical Literacy Fair will not be continuing in 2018. I have unfortunately had to put a hold on the event due to extenuating circumstances,” organizer and New Westminster Secondary School athletics teacher Chad Oatway wrote in an email to sponsors.
Oatway confirmed the cancellation with the Record in a phone interview, but he would not elaborate on why it was shut down.
“Working with my students, I think it’s a very valuable learning experience for them,” he told the Record, adding he would like to be able to bring it back in the future.
Hyacks in Motion began in 2014 and was organized by the New Westminster Secondary School’s sport leadership cohort under Oatway’s guidance. The event included a three-kilometre run and/or walk followed by a health fair featuring entertainment and information to motivate people to get healthy and active.
Money raised through registration was used by the sport leadership cohort and to support health education in the New Westminster school district.
