New Westminster reveals its basket secrets

Assorted happenings Around Town
Claude LeDoux
Pretty flowers: Claude LeDoux, the city's horticultural manager, will be sharing some of the secrets of New Westminster's beautiful hanging baskets at upcoming courses. He's shown with some of the city's baskets that adorned local streets in 2013.

You know spring is in the air when the City of New Westminster reveals the secrets to its famous hanging baskets.
The city is once again preparing to offer its two-hour hanging basket courses, where it will share tips on how to create a lush, colourful hanging basket. During the class, participants will receive hands-on instruction and create an 18-inch or a 14-inch basket with chain hanger, plants, soil, fertilizer – and the famous wick and watering pan.
The courses, which cost $64 for a smaller basket and $74 for the larger basket, take place in the Queen’s Park greenhouse complex. Four classes are being offered this year: Monday, April 28 – 12 to 2 p.m.; Saturday, May 3 – 3 to 5 p.m.; Thursday, May 8 – 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; and Saturday, May 17 – 9 to 11 a.m.
To register, call 604-777-5111. Anyone who has participated in a previous year should sign up for a “redo” class.
