Lantern Festival Port Royal
Welcome fall: New Westminster residents are invited to attend the second annual Lantern Festival in Port Royal on Sept. 21. People will have a chance to decorate paper lanterns and join in a parade.

The autumn chill has arrived – making it the perfect time to celebrate.

The Queensborough Community Centre, the Queensborough special programs committee and Aragon Development are teaming up on the second annual lantern festival.

“It’s in celebration for the mid-autumn festival that is a traditional Chinese festival,” said Nikki Lajeunesse, a recreation programmer at the community centre.

At the festival, people will be able to enjoy live entertainment and create beautiful LED-powered lanterns under the full moon. Kids can personalize their lanterns with paint, decorations and stickers.

“We are going to do a parade around the park,” Lajeunesse told The Record. “We will also be eating traditional Chinese moon cakes.”

The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Port Royal Park, which is at the east end of Ewen Avenue in Queensborough.

“It’s free family fun,” Lajeunesse said. “We are trying to get as many community members out as possible.”
