Crowds lined the streets of New Westminster for the ever-popular Hyack International Parade.
While another commitment prevented me from attending the parade, I’ve heard plenty of positive reports from folks who went to the annual event. Some even suggested the parade attracted even more people than last year.
If, like me, you missed the parade, you can visit www.royalcityrecord.com, where you’ll find a photo gallery of the day’s fun.
Next stop: Sapperton Day
New Westminster can’t be accused of being a no-fun city.
With Hyack Festival behind us, residents don’t have to wait long to hit the streets and party once again. The Sapperton Business Association is holding the 2014 Sapperton Day street festival on Sunday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on East Columbia Street, between Braid and Sherbrooke streets.
Street performers, musical groups, bouncy castles, clowns, games, a pancake breakfast, a rock-climbing wall, marketplace vendors and more are all part of the day’s fun. Organizers are anticipating more than 12,000 people could attend the one-day event.
All proceeds raised at Sapperton Day will be donated to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. Last year’s festival raised $13,000 for the foundation.
The summer fun keeps on coming
A local lad is hard at work planning a followup to last year’s successful Fun Day.
Nur Elmasri received a grant through the Vancouver Foundation and organized last summer’s successful kids Fun Day. Having secured another grant this year, he’s planning this year’s event.
Local families will want to mark Wednesday, Aug. 27 on the calendar, as that’s the day Fun Day will be held on the Moody Park playground from noon to 3 p.m. Music, henna, hair braiding, a stilt walker, a visit from the Tumblebus are among this year’s festivities. Stay tuned for more details later this summer.
Movies for moms (and dads, too)
If you’re home with a wee one and craving some adult time-out, why not catch a movie?
Landmark Cinemas is continuing its Movie Tots showings on Tuesday, June 3 with a 1:15 p.m. showing of Disney’s new Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie.
If you haven’t been, the Movie Tots showings give parents a chance to see a “grown-up” movie in a baby-friendly setting – check out www.landmark
cinemas.com for all the details about the movie showings.
