New Westminster celebrates B.C. Rivers Day with exhibit openings – and more

Fraser River Discovery Centre unveiled three new exhibits – and opened up its second floor – during RiverFest 2013 last weekend.

The second floor space is now home to three exhibits: My River My Home (art and science from river basins around the world); I Spy With My Little Eye (the bustling river industry as seen from the centre’s windows); and Aliens Among Us (a traveling exhibit from the Royal B.C. Museum that’s all about alien species).

“The grand opening of our second floor exhibit galleries has been eagerly awaited by many, and we are very happy and proud to see this project coming to fruition with such quality exhibits,” said Catherine Ouellet-Martin, executive director of Discovery Centre. “Now with two full floors of interactive exhibits representing the industry, environment and socio-cultural aspects of the Fraser River, the Fraser River Discovery Centre is truly the voice of the Fraser.”

The opening was held during RiverFest: Inspired by the River. Discovery Centre, the City of New Westminster and the Arts Council of New Westminster teamed up to present the annual celebration of B.C. and World Rivers Day on Sept. 27 and 28, which featured live entertainment at the Quay, artist and artisans’ displays, paddlewheeler river tours, interactive displays from river-related conservation and environmental organizations and more.

Fraser River Discovery Centre, located at 788 Quayside Dr., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday. Admission to galleries is by donation.
