Nur Elmasri has much to be proud of after spearheading a day of fun for local kids.

The 11-year-old student at Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School applied for a neighbourhood small grant from Family Services of Greater Vancouver so he could offer a Fun Day event for kids who can't afford expensive activities.

More than 500 people attended the Aug. 28 event in Moody Park that featured free activities such as face painting, henna, magicians, healthy snacks, musical entertainment and the Tumblebus. "It was amaizng," he said.

The Vancouver Foundation provides funds for the neighbourhood small grant program, administered by Family Services of Greater Vancouver in New Westminster. Sixty-six projects were approved in New Westminster in 2013, including cleanup events, sport-related activities, festivals, community gardens, workshops, arts and culture events, community activities and block parties.
