Sir Paul McCartney sent a message to the Vancouver Human Society prising the cities of New Westminster, Vancouver, North Vancouver and Port Moody for proclaiming May 15 as Meatless Monday, a day aimed at raising awareness about the links between diet and the environment, health and animal welfare.

Well done. Love Paul and the family.”

The Vancouver Humane Society said the municipal proclamations were inspired by the ongoing Meatless Monday initiatives of the society and local schools. Meatless Monday is a global initiatives that’s taking place in more than 30 countries and growing across Metro Vancouver.

The proclamation read by Mayor Jonathan Cote on behalf of the city stated that over consumption of meat, dairy and eggs is associated with many major environmental problems, including climate change, worsened health outcomes and animal welfare concerns and noted that a growing number of people are reducing their meat consumption to help address issues related to factory farming and to help prevent animal cruelty.
