New Westminster showcased its waterfront – and its potential – at Sunday’s Pier 2 Landing event.

The city decided to capitalize on the closure of Front Street to through traffic to host Pier 2 Landing, which featured a variety of events at Westminster Pier Park, Sapperton Landing Park and along Front Street. The event kicked off with a ribbon cutting of the Fourth Street overpass and elevator.

Festival highlights included: community art projects; cycling tours and a historical and environmental walking tour; live entertainment, including busking stops along the route; a barbecue; bike decorating; a pop-up museum; and fishing at Sapperton Landing.

The event drew great reviews from participants, including Jennifer Wolowic, who tweeted: “Thx @New_Westminster for great #pier2landing. Went to places I've never been. History talk inspired us to plan date night to photo archives!”

Two local families had to cut their visit to Pier 2 Landing short, after a fishing accident.

“Quickest visit to Pier to Landing, had to rush a father and his daughter w/ fish hook thru her eye to ER!” tweeted Royal City Family. “Very scary!”
