There are a variety of events taking place in New Westminster this weekend, including some that will make you wish it were spring. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Jan. 24 to 26:

1.  Discover the many volunteer opportunities that exist in the Royal City at the New Westminster Festival of Volunteers. This year’s event features more than 35 local non-profit organizations that provide info about volunteering opportunities in their organizations, as well as entertainment. The event takes place on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Royal City Centre at Sixth and Sixth in uptown New Westminster. You could even be the lucky winner of a $500 shopping spree at Royal City Centre.

2.  Get a sneak peek at one of the performances that will be part of Royal City Musical Theatre’s spring production of Annie, when Julia MacLean performs Tomorrowto open the 2014 Show of Hearts. Variety – the Children’s Charity’s telethon gets underway on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. and continues until Sunday.

3.  Enjoy a night of food and entertainment at the Grand Court Order of the Amaranth’s Robbie Burns Night. The dinner, which will raise funds for diabetes, takes place on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 508 Agnes St., $25. Cocktails are at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. For tickets, contact John McMurchie at [email protected] or 604-953-0511.

4.   Go in search of items in the New Westminster Public Library, where a scavenger hunt is taking place daily for kids until Sunday, Jan. 26. Kids who complete the hunt will be entered in a draw to win a prize. Anyone who is interested can start the hunt at the children’s information desk.

5.  Check out MorphoMan (Seattle-based performer Christian Swenson), who will perform at River Market on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. While he will be “morphing into characters, dinosaurs, aliens and ‘body music’ on the spot,” audience members will be able to join him to “act like water,” create stories and more. Curious? River Market is located at 810 Quayside Dr.

6.  Stock up on ’Bellies gear at the New Westminster Salmonbellies clothing sale that’s taking place on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Queen’s Park Arena. Whether you’re a kid keen on playing box lacrosse this spring (you can register online) or interested in getting a head start on the Senior Salmonbellies’ 125th season, you’re bound to find some attire to your liking at this sale.
