New West moms enjoy morning out

Local groups benefiting from Vancouver Foundation grants

A group of local moms got a bit of a break and a yummy meal to start their day.

Khalid Abedi said organizers received a grant to put on the June 17 event for 50 moms that included a free lunch and couple hours away from the kids.

“We are making Afghan and Filipino dishes for moms, the ladies who are staying at home,” she said. “They don’t have anybody to take care of their kids.”

While it’s often hard for the moms to get time away from their little ones, volunteers took care of the kids in the child-friendly space at the Olivet Baptist Church while the moms enjoyed a break.

Family Services of Greater Vancouver administers the Vancouver Foundation’s New Westminster neighbourhood small grants program. Now in its fourth year, the program approved 65 grants totalling $36,578 for 2015.

Maylen Crespo, coordinator of the New Westminster neighbourhood small grants program, said 21 of the applications were for block parties, nine related to arts and culture, seven were oriented to diversity, six were for greening projects and five were recreational. Four of the applications were multicultural, three were to provide community workshops and two were for community cleanup events.
