School’s out, but that doesn’t mean your kids should ditch the books.
Providing fun reading opportunities this summer will engage your child to continue learning and improving their literacy skills. After all, what could be better than lounging in the sun with a glass of lemonade in one hand and a book in another?
Here are some ideas on making reading fun for the whole family this summer:
It’s not too late to join the library’s Summer Reading Club. This year’s theme is Book a Trip and is open to anyone ages three to 11. Read at least 15 minutes every day, get rewarded with prizes or stickers every week, and receive a medal at the end of the summer. Visit the library for performances, storytimes and crafts all summer long.
Pack a picnic and bring your books. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Watermelon Seed are some fantastic picture books about food that you can read aloud and share. Chapter books like James and the Giant Peach and The Penderwicks are great choices to read aloud while your kids gaze at the clouds and let their imaginations soar.
Celebrate the night sky by setting up your backyard with sleeping bags and flashlights and cuddle up with your books under the stars. Take a journey through space with How to Be a Space Explorer or Touch the Brightest Star, then snuggle up with a charming bedtime story like A Book of Sleep.
Tell scary stories around the campfire. Take turns reading creepy stories from Half-minute Horrors. If that’s not enough, The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier is a haunting story that will keep you up all night.
There are endless ways to incorporate reading in your summer activities.
