New West chamber teams up with Douglas College on CAN project

Billboard ads will shine a light on local non-profits

The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and Douglas College want to do what they can to celebrate local not-for-profit organizations.

The two groups have joined forces to launch the Community Awareness Now pilot project, which aims to bring awareness to and celebrate not-for-profits in New Westminster. The organizations being featured in this pilot project include: Fraser River Discovery Centre, the Last Door Addiction Treatment Centre, St. John Ambulance, New Westminster Baseball, the Arts Council of New Westminster, Lower Mainland Purpose Society, New Westminster Youth Ambassadors Society and the Seniors Services Society.

“The New Westminster chamber is always searching for opportunities for our members,” said chamber CEO Cori Lynn Germiquet in a press release.  “We have taken on the responsibility of managing the campaign, providing the creative and providing consultation to the participants. All of which could not happen without the generosity of Douglas College, Divanti Designs and Western Media Group.”

Through the CAN project, the New Westminster Chamber and Douglas College hope to showcase local not-for-profit organizations by featuring them on the digital sign near the Queensborough Bridge for one month beginning June 1. It’s estimated each billboard ad will generate more 275,000 views for each organization.

“The impact of not-for-profits organizations is something that is often overlooked in a community analysis, but it is these community organizations that are important components to our quality of life,” said a press release from Douglas College and the chamber of commerce. “Not-for-profit organizations are everywhere; community, education and health -are foundations, arts and culture organizations, environmental and conservation societies, business associations, youth, seniors and sporting associations are all types of not-for-profit organizations that we are celebrating in New Westminster.”
