With Heritage Week taking place in February, there’s no better time to check out the New Westminster Historical Society’s monthly presentation.

This month’s presentation takes place Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the New Westminster Public Library at 716 Sixth Ave. The theme of Heritage Week 2014 is Heritage Afloat.

The historical society is swimming with stories and images on the topic of maritime issues, so much so that it’s decided to offer a two-part presentation beginning this month.

“The February presentation will kick off the Heritage Afloat theme with early vessels, their captains, cargoes, conditions, routes, plus ships of sail, interesting firsts, other images and anecdotes from our maritime history,” stated a press release about the event. “More to come in March.”

The program is free, and everyone is welcome. There is no need to pre-register.

Flying the flag

The City of New Westminster is flying the Rainbow Flag until the closing ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The city raised the Rainbow Flag as a show of support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community during the Sochi Olympics.

“As a diverse city at the centre of Metro Vancouver – home of the 2010 Olympic Games – we feel a strong need to demonstrate our support for the equal rights of the LGBT community both here at home and around the world,” Mayor Wayne Wright explained in a press release. “New Westminster is a community that welcomes everyone, no matter what their religion, race, culture or sexual orientation.”

The 2014 Games have been dogged by controversy since the Russian parliament enacted “anti-gay” laws last summer in the lead-up to the Olympics.
