A New Westminster Army cadet earned a top award while taking a training program on Vancouver Island this summer.
Cadet Salina Ng of 2316 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in New Westminster developed personal health and fitness skills when completing the six-week fitness and sports instructor course at Albert Head Cadet Training Centre, which is located near Victoria. She was selected to receive the prestigious ANAVETS Cadet Medal of Merit for her outstanding performance this summer and in recognition of her being Top Cadet of her course.
The six-week course provides cadets an opportunity to develop as a fitness and sports specialist, providing the skills and knowledge needed to be a fitness and sports instructor and a team leader for fitness and sports activities conducted at the corps during regionally directed activities and/or as a staff cadet at a cadet training centre.
More than 70 cadets, including Ng. completed the fitness and sports instructor course this summer. They tackled topics like personal fitness and healthy living, cadet fitness assessment and leading recreational sports.
“Making new friends and connections with people,” said Ng, when asked what she liked most about her training. “I’ve had tremendous opportunities to learn new skills as well during my time at Albert Head.”
Each summer, about 900 cadets aged 12 to 18 and 70 staff cadets attend Albert Head Cadet Training Centre, where a broad array of training is offered specializing in basic aviation technology and aerospace, music, survival, as well as fitness and sports instructor courses.
