Cadet Chief Petty Officer 1st class Kevin Daniel , left, was shocked when Captain Steve Waddell, commander of Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, informed him he'd be leading more than 1,000 cadets this summer as Coxswain of HMCS Quadra.

Kudos to Cadet Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin Daniel, who finished the cadet year on a high note.

Daniel was selected as Cadet Coxswain and led Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Quadra in Comox for the 2015 summer training session. The honour of being appointed the most senior cadet aboard the training centre is bestowed on one cadet annually and is the highest attainable position for a Royal Canadian Sea Cadet.

Daniel received the good news at an emotional end-of-year awards ceremony at Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corp Fraser, the local New Westminster sea cadets corps.

“We knew that he had been selected several weeks in advance, but kept the surprise for the ceremony,” said Lieut. Bryan Watson, commanding officer of RCSCC Fraser. “It was worth waiting, as the shock of the announcement set in and raw emotion with tears of excitement came across Daniel’s face. We’re all so very proud of his achievement and know that he will represent New Westminster very well in his role.”

At the end-of-year- ceremony, Daniel was honoured with several awards, including the Navy League of Canada Medal of Excellence as the top cadet in the region, and the Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence in recognition of his commitment to citizenship and volunteer activities both inside and outside the cadet program.

Sea cadets is a free, national program offered to youth aged 12 to 18. Fraser Sea Cadets meet Wednesday nights on Annacis Island, beginning Sept. 9.
