Students in NWSS bands, choirs and ensembles will be performing at Music Mayhem on Feb. 15.

There will be mayhem at New Westminster Secondary School next week – but it will be a good kind of mayhem.

Formerly known as the Band-athon, the Music Mayhem event will see students in NWSS’s band, choir, string and guitar programs performing classics and contemporary, jazz and pop.

Steve Clements, director of bands at NWSS, said students are excited to take part in Music Mayhem – an “open rehearsal” that’s raising funds for music groups at the high school.

“In the past, this event featured band groups only – our annual Band-athon. Things have expanded to include all music groups now at the high school,” he said. “Come on in and watch as the NWSS choirs, strings ensemble, and concert bands play together in an informal setting. The day will begin with the strings ensemble, and then continue with a massed choir, and finish with a massed band.”

Music Mayhem is on Thursday, Feb. 15 from 3 to 8 p.m. in the theatre at New Westminster Secondary School, 820 Sixth St.

“This year, our groups are raising money to attend music festivals in Edmonton and Whistler and represent the strong tradition of music education in New Westminster,” Clements said. “Feel free to come by and watch, listen, and enjoy... donations of all kinds accepted!”

The NWSS music department took a break over COVID and last year did a smaller event last year, but it’s now back into the full swing of events, he said.

A donation table will be set up during the Music Mayhem event.

“Want to help out this year's kids and the music department at NWSS from the comfort of your own home? This year you can,” Clements added. “Our online 50/50 fundraiser is part of our Music Mayhem event. You can get your 50/50 tickets here for a chance to win over $1,000.”

The winner of the online 50/50 raffle will be announced on Thursday, Feb. 15 at the end of the Music Mayhem. Tickets are three for $10, 10 for $25, or 25 for $50 and are available online (must be 19+ and a resident of B.C.)
