urnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian has been recognized by his peers in Ottawa.

Julian was honoured to receive the runner-up award for the Most Knowledgeable MP as part of Maclean's magazine's sixth annual Parliamentarian of the Year Awards. Prime Minister Stephen Harper took top spot in the award, which was voted on by Parliamentarians themselves.

Julian's work has also been recognized by Chantal Hébert, a well-known political commentator in Canada. She named Julian as one of seven standouts in the parliamentary session, saying "the industrious" Julian has "risen to the challenge" of being the NDP's natural resources critic in the fall session.

"I am honoured to receive these recognitions for the parliamentary session, but I am very conscious of the fact that the knowledge I am able to bring to Parliament is the result of representing Burnaby-New Westminster, Canada's most diverse and most extraordinary riding," Julian said in a press release.

HELLO AND GOODBYE

Wishing a Royal City welcome to Cadet Sharon Tidd and a fond farewell to Captain Dave Macpherson.

After many years of good works in the Royal City, Macpherson is moving on from his role with the Salvation Army in New Westminster to take a position in Burnaby.

Tidd, who is the corps office designate, arrived in New Westminster on Nov. 15 and has been working with Macpherson to transition into her new role.

APP FOR THAT WASTE

The City of New Westminster is helping ensure that residents don't let their electronic devices go to waste.

The city has launched the "my-waste" recycling and garbage collection mobile App for smartphone and tablet users. The free mobile App puts garbage, recycling, and cleaner, greener collection details at their fingertips.

"This is a great new way for us to connect with residents and share the latest information about our city's residential collection program," said Kristian Davis, supervisor of solid waste and recycling. "We want to make recycling and yard and food scrap collection as easy as possible. We hope that this App will do just that."

According to the city, the 'my-waste'(TM) App allows mobile device users to download the full range of information that is normally available on the city's website and a collection schedule. Customized reminders, which can be tailored specifically to their neighbourhood, can be sent weekly, or just when the collection day changes, such as holidays or special events.

The App also has a search function that lets residents find information about what to do with a regular or out-of-the-ordinary item, tips for reducing and recycling waste in apartment and condo buildings and a "report-a-problem" function that lets residents to report collection-related issues such as missed collections or illegal dumping.
