Money sense at library

Many British Columbians have lost their life savings to risky or dangerous investments. If you encounter a sales pitch that sounds too good to be true - STOP! It's a fraud warning sign that the investment might be a scam.

Many British Columbians have lost their life savings to risky or dangerous investments. If you encounter a sales pitch that sounds too good to be true - STOP! It's a fraud warning sign that the investment might be a scam.

The New Westminster Public Library is fortunate to have the B.C. Securities Commission present their InvestRight seminar on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. They can help you develop the critical thinking skills you need to protect yourself when investing and will cover how to spot a warning sign and understand the risks, where to call to report an investment scam, what questions to ask and where to research or get a second opinion. The Better Business Bureau will also be on hand to talk about the top 10 non-investment scams, from roofers to Nigerian scam letters. As space is limited, please pre-register at 604-527-4660.

The library's books can also help you learn to invest comfortably so you can sleep at night. In Swindlers: Cons & Cheats and How to Protect Your Investments From Them Al and Mark Rosen show you how to arm yourself as an investor and protect yourself in a market where the numbers can be deliberately misleading.

Andrew Dagys in Stock Investing for Canadians for Dummies gives you strategies for weathering any economic climate and for selecting and managing profitable investments in either a bear or bull market. And Gordon Pape's Sleep Easy Investing explains that if you adopt the sleep-easy philosophy and judge all your investment decisions on how well they meet this down-to-earth test, both your health and wealth will benefit.
