Royal City residents will be celebrating the grand reopening of Megan's Place playground in Ryall Park this weekend.
The Queensborough Community Centre and the Queensborough special programs committee are holding the Megan's Place Tiny Tot Playground Picnic and Children's Festival on Sunday, June 24 from 11: 30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. at Ryall Park at 920 Ewen Ave. The free event features live entertainment, interactive activities and more.
The park is named in honour three-year-old Megan Gunderson, who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in front of her Queensborough home in June 1996.
Following her death, the community rallied together to raise close to $100,000 for a new playground.
Longtime Queensborough resident Dolly Gunderson (Megan's grandma) invites community members to come celebrate the grand reopening of the playground. The official ceremonies will take place at 11: 30 a.m.
The City of New Westminster included $135,000 in its 2012 budget to completely renovate Megan's Place and the neighbouring spray park in Ryall Park.
PARENTS ELECTED
The New Westminster district parent advisory council has elected its executive for the coming year.
Rob Peregoodoff will be chair of the local DPAC, while Beth Ott will serve as vice-chair. Kal Randhawa is the group's secretary, and the treasurer's position is vacant.
Wendy Harris is the past chair of the district parent advisory council. The group's purpose includes enhancing communications between the parents, students and community with school staff and administration.
QUEEN'S PARK PLANS UNVEILED
The community is invited to check out the Queen's Park draft master plan at an open house and barbecue.
The City of New Westminster is holding the open house and barbecue on Wednesday, June 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Queen's Park.
The open house, being held in the lobby of Queen's Park Arena, will show plans that have been developed through design workshops. The city has taken the information gleaned through public consultation and compiled it into a set of priorities - for which it is now seeking feedback.
MARKET RAISES MONEY FOR RCH
River Market is celebrating the contributions that Royal Columbian Hospital has been making to the community for the past 150 years.
The market is holding a 150 & Going Strong fundraiser on Thursday, June 28. The fundraiser will include wine, food and entertainment.
"This year, Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) is celebrating 150 years of excellence - a historic milestone for B.C.'s first hospital. RCH opened in 1862 with 30 beds for men only. Today, this hospital serves one in three British Columbians, from men and women to children and babies," said a press release from River Market.
In addition to the June 28 fundraiser, River Market is dedicating the Canada Day long weekend to Royal Columbian Hospital, with events including a pancake breakfast served by local firefighters and carnival games.
