Four branches of the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada will be celebrating B.C. Loyalist Day on Sunday in New Westminster.

The association's four Pacific regional branches are celebrating the first B.C. Loyalist Day on Sunday, July 22 from 11: 30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. at Queen's Park. Residents are invited to bring a picnic lunch and watch the unfurling of the Loyalist flag.

"Come hear the proclamation read that was given to the four branches as we celebrate our loyalist ancestors," said a press release about the event.

"Many British Columbians are direct descendants of the first loyalists who arrived in what is now eastern Canada in 1783 and after the American Revolution."

The provincial government has proclaimed July 22 as Loyalist Day in B.C.

LACROSSE SCIENCE

Instead of the wooden floor at Queen's Park Arena, members of the New Westminster senior Salmonbellies will be showing off their talents at the innovation lab at Science World.

Science World is venturing into the world of lacrosse by hosting Lacrosse 101 on Saturday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dyson Innovation Lab.

"Check out the science behind the fastest game on two feet with players from Canada's most historic lacrosse franchise, the New Westminster Senior Salmonbellies," said a press release about the event. "Find out how to take a shot, the art of stringing a lacrosse stick, and the history of Canada's national summer sport."

The group's mission is to provide resources to enhance the lives of people with disabilities and facilitate community awareness.

LIBRARY SALE

The New Westminster Public Library encourages residents to drop by and pick up some summer reading at its ongoing book sale.

The library sells discarded books and gift books that aren't needed in the library for prices ranging from 25 cents to $2. Special books have special prices.

In addition to a wide selection of paperbacks, the library notes that a different topic is highlighted every two weeks. Upcoming topics include: health, fitness and medicine (to July 25); cooking (July 26 to Aug. 12); and literature and language (Aug. 13 to 30).

All proceeds from the sale of books go toward special projects to benefit library users.
